A little bit about Cayuga County and New York’s Finger Lakes Region

Formed in 1799, Cayuga County was named for the Cayuga Indian Tribe, one of five initial members that formed the Iroquois Confederation in the 1500s. Cayuga (ka-yu-ga) means “people of the wetlands.”

Home to several historical figures like Millard Fillmore, William H. Seward, Harriet Tubman, and Ted Case, Cayuga County is well known for its historical significance and legacies. Walk in the footsteps of Tubman’s day-to-day life and explore museums and other sites relevant to our nation’s chronicle of growth.
